Thingyan is Myanmar’s traditional New Year festival, celebrated in mid-April, typically from April 13th to 16th. It marks the transition from the old year to the new, and it is the most anticipated and widely celebrated festival in the country.

Rooted in both Buddhist and Hindu traditions, Thingyan originally comes from the Sanskrit word “Sankranti”, meaning the sun's movement from one sign of the zodiac to another. It represents a time of cleansing and renewal.

Water Symbolism

The most iconic feature of Thingyan is the splashing of water, symbolizing the washing away of sins and bad luck from the past year. In cities and towns across Myanmar, roads are filled with people dancing, singing, and throwing water at one another from buckets, hoses, and makeshift stages called pandals. Even fire hoses are used in some places!

Traditions and Customs

Almsgiving: Many people perform good deeds, such as offering free food and drinks, giving alms to monks, and releasing captive fish or birds.
Traditional performances: You’ll see people in traditional dress performing dances and music, especially in community gatherings and on stages.
Food: A popular Thingyan dish is mont lone yay baw, glutinous rice balls with palm sugar filling, usually made together with family and friends.

Spiritual Meaning

Thingyan is also a deeply spiritual time. Many people visit temples to pray, meditate, and pay respects to elders. Some young men may temporarily become monks during this period as a meritorious act.

Modern Celebrations

While Thingyan has deep religious roots, today’s celebrations often blend tradition with modern fun—featuring concerts, DJ stages, and large water-fighting events that attract crowds of all ages.
